Family Camping Trip
Well, we did it. After three failed attempts to camp this summer, we just decided to go last weekend. On Thursday night it looked like the perfect weekend, so we packed up and left for a quick overnight outing on Friday. Mariah was sad that we weren't going with any friends, but we all had a good time. I did hot dogs for dinner and donuts for breakfast. I really didn't want it to be a lot of work. We even got in a short hike in the morning (with a few more spider webs ;).
Camping is always interesting. There is nothing like being in the outdoors and not knowing who your neighbors will be. Next to us was the scout troop from a ward in our stake. Next to them some crazy people who had domestic violence issues. A few sites over in the other direction there was a frat party that lasted all night (OK, so I'm not sure if it was all night, but at 3 am they finally turned off the music, only to start with firecrackers again). The girls slept through it all. We did manage to pay them back the next morning at 7am when we took the girls to the bathroom (right next to their camping site). One of their dogs was excited to play with the girls and knocked Ruth to the ground. Matt and I were both yelling at the dog (which we thought was going to eat her at first) and Ruthie, of course, was screaming like it was the end of her life. They were all awake in a few moments.
One good neighbor was a dog named Elsie that visited our girls. She would show up with a Frisbee in her mouth and drop it at the feet of the closest girl. All of them took turns playing with the dog until her owner would come and drag her away, much to my children's dismay. I want a dog just like this one, but that doesn't poop. Any suggestions?

my kids LOVE camping, but it is a lot of work for me. days afterwards i am still washing all of the smokey clothes.
Yeah, Derek was pretty upset at me that we didn't go with you guys! I may have to repent for this one. I'm glad you got it in this year and it looks like you had a great time as family!
Sometimes it just works better on a whim. We just went on a ward camp out, and I don't know when I will recover from the longest night of my life.
Looks like so much fun. Mariah is looking so much like you:)
